Modeled and estimated values

Many values in the panels are not measurements. They come from global models and datasets, each for its own period, and are marked with * where they appear:

  • Discharge: natural long-term average for 1971–2000 (WaterGAP model). It does not reflect today's dam regulation.
  • Flow regime: GIRES v1.0 predictions (Messager et al., 2021), not observations.
  • Flooded area: mean annual minimum and maximum from satellite data, 1993–2004 (GIEMS-D15).
  • Population: 2010 estimate (GPWv4).
  • Dam regulation: storage of the reservoirs upstream (GRanD v1.1) as a share of the modeled natural annual flow. Above 100%, they can hold more than a year of flow. Capped at 1,000%.

Large dams regulate the Limay and the Neuquén today, so the flow in these rivers can differ a lot from the natural averages shown here.

The basin outline, the sub-basins and the courses of the named rivers were derived by this project from HydroBASINS and HydroRIVERS. Most names come from IGN, matched to the river network automatically, with a confidence level shown on each stream. They may contain errors.
